What a fantastic drive. We accompanied Bruce from our 4x4 club who had seen the drive details on ExploreOz. The trip takes you from Mansfield to Harrietville via Sheep Yard Flat, Bluff Hut, Wombat Spur Track, Little Baldy, Wonangatta, Talbotville, Grant, Lankeys Hut, Dargo Plains Rd, Blue Rag Track & Hotham to Harrietville. We took three week days for the trip; parts of the trip are very popular and you can expect to see many other vehicles if you travel at the weekend. The roads are rough and, in places, steep and rocky. The views along the way are stunning and the 4x4 driving interesting. The two stand out 4x4 sections were Wombat Spur Track and the Blue Rag Track. We travelled about 500 Km in the three days. From Bluff Hut to Wonangatta the going was slow; we were constanly travelling at 30 kph or less because of the rocky terrain. Some do it more quickly. We took 2.5 hours to do one section we know others have done in an hour and 50 minutes. We prefer slower speeds over rough terrain. First night we camped at Lovitts Creek, a pretty spot & very good camping site. We had brought lightweight sleeping bags as temperatures in Benalla & Wangaratta were 36C during the day and 16C+ at night. WRONG! We froze that night. The second night was much better. We camped at Talbotville and had a very mild night. The abandonned town of Grant was interesting and worth a visit. During the gold rush there were 2000 people there and the town had a Bank of Victoria branch located there.
